Support Groups
It can be very frustrating when you begin your role as a caregiver, and it can be very lonely to be a caregiver.
A support group is a group of people you can turn to for emotional support. The group may also provide practical help, information, guidance and feedback about your stressful experiences and ways of coping. Support groups can have many different styles and formats; look around to find one that is right for you.
Support groups can offer:
- The opportunity to meet other people who are in a similar situation.
- Sharing information.
- Listening to each other’s stories, problems, etc, hearing how other people coped. Some people find this really interesting and helpful – Other people say ‘It was depressing listening to everyone’s problems!’
- Education – information about resources, services and how to navigate the system.
