What Is Project Home Share?

Home share is an arrangement between two or more people in which one shares his/her home with another in exchange for a financial contribution to household expenses, services, companionship or some combination.
Home Providers who have space to spare in their homes are offering a private bedroom, shared use of the common areas of the house and a chance to live in a home rather than an apartment in exchange for a modest rent, well below current apartment prices. Some Home Providers offer free rent in exchange for services such as yard work, some housekeeping, errands or other jobs. The most important aspect of Project Home Share is companionship and security for both the Home Provider and the Home Seeker.
The decision to share is made by those involved with the assistance of the Senior Resources - Agency on Aging Project Home Share coordinator. One person in each match must be age 60 or older.

What Are The Benefits Of Project Home Share?

Home providers experience increased security and companionship. They receive limited, clearly defined services, which can help maintain independence, such as yard work, shopping, driving, food preparation, or moderate housekeeping. In addition, they may receive a modest income toward household expenses.

Home seekers find affordable housing, often half the cost of local market rate. They can expect to have a separate bedroom, sometimes a separate bath and shared kitchen and other household areas. They also have the experience of providing helpful assistance to an elderly individual.

What Does Senior Resources - Agency On Aging Project Home Share Coordinator Do?

The coordinator will: screen, interview references, request background checks from appropriate agencies (the report(s) will be kept confidential; however, findings may be used to disqualify the person from Project Home Share), and introduce potential home sharers with a follow up visit prior to signing the agreement. The Project Home Share coordinator will facilitate a home-sharing agreement and initiate periodic follow-up. In addition, information and referral services may be provided as deemed appropriate.

What Does Project Home Share Cost?

$10 registration fee and $25 match contribution fee is charged.

How Can I Participate?

Home Providers interested in more information about sharing their homes should call to arrange an interview to determine their needs and interests. This program is available to the fifty-six town service area of Senior Resources. One person in each home share arrangement must be age 60 or over; however, younger people are encouraged to inquire. Please call Senior Resources - Agency on Aging and ask to speak to the Home Share coordinator (1-800-690-6998 or 860-887-3561).
